Apple iPod Portable Media Players
Ever since the launch of the first model in 2001 Apple's iPod has been the gadget to beat in the media player market. With over 100 million units sold it's still way ahead of the competition.

iPod nano
The first nano model arrived in September 2005 with the sleeker looking version we now know and love released a year later. The nano is a lightweight flash-based player that packs a lot into it's small size. Here are a few features:
- Holds up to 1,000 songs and full-color album art
- Bright 1.5-inch color LCD display
- Plays music, podcasts and audiobooks
- Charges and syncs via USB
- Dimensions 3.5 x 1.6 x 0.27 inches (that's thinner than a pencil)
- Weighs just 42.5 grams (1.5 ounces)
- Completely skip-free playback
- Works with Mac OS X or Windows 2000/XP/Vista
- Up to 14 hours of battery life
- Holds up to 25,000 photos
- Syncs contacts, calendars and to-do lists
iPod Shuffle
The 1GB iPod Shuffle is even smaller than the nano. With enough memory for around 12 hours playback time and weighing less than a set of car keys, it's just the thing to fit in your pocket. There's no screen, but the whole point is that it's designed to play songs at random (hence the name).
Video iPod
The fifth generation of full sized, hard-disk based iPod can play MP4 video as well as a variety of audio formats. The 80GB model has enough storage for two hours of video or thousands of audio tracks. It can also store photos and other files too. Battery life is around 14 hours.
There's also a range of games available for the iPod, such as Pac-Man, Sudoku, Mini Golf and many more.
The mother of all accessories
Let's face it, nobody wants to wear headphones all the time. Around the house you want portable speakers that sound great. There are some really good docking stations that are made especially for the iPod range. Good choices are the Klipsch iGrove or the Apple iPod HiFi system. But we reckon, if you have the money, you should really check out the Bose Sounddock. It's what we have at UKITbits HQ (the sleek looking black model) and it sounds simply awesome. If you plump for the Klipsch or Apple models we've mentioned though, we don't think you'll be disappointed.
